[K-Culture ] Do U Know? How Korean celebrates Birthday?!

by Jenn101 2020. 7. 28.

Hello, Everyone!

It's your First Korean , Jenn, again.

When is your birthday?

Actually, it was my birthday the other day!

I had a wonderful time with my friends and family.

How about you?

How do you celebrate your birthday in your country?

It must be quite same for all of the people in this world to celebrate it nowadays,

but, did you know 'the Korean Special Tradition to celebrate the Birthday'?

Today, I'll tell you what we do and what it means to us!

Most of the things must be same as you, having a party with your friends or family.

But  the special thing is , 'We Korean have ' Miyeok Guk' (미역국 : seaweed soup) on birthday'.

What is Miyeok Guk (미역국: seaweed soup)?

Miyeok Guk (copyright : 압박의 달인)

Miyeok (미역)  means  seaweed, and Guk (국) means soup.

It is one of the soups made with seaweed, which is usually made for mothers who just gave birth to babies or someone who is on one's birthday.

Seaweed is the richness of Calcium and Iodine

so, Korean mothers usually have Miyeok Guk when they gave birth to their babies.

Also, Koreans have it on their birthday.

It is not a must-do thing or something, but it is kind of a social convention+ tradition in Korea.

In this year, the 2 days before my birthday was my mother's birthday,

so I set to cook Miyeok Guk for my mother!

I'll show you how I made it!

0. put a handful of dried seaweed in the water ( Loot at the No.3 how it changed)

  1.  Prepare a pot and put enough amount of sesame oil. (1-2 spoon)

 2. put each of 1 spoon of soy sauce and anchovy sauce.

After that,  Stir-fry 3 trimmed abalone and enough amount of brisket (or any part of beef) with 1 spoon of crushed garlic. ( garlic is necessary!!!)

3. put the soaked seaweed on it and stir-fry together.

When the beef, abalone, and seaweed evenly stir-fried, pour the water(1L).

4. Simmer in low heat and season with salt or anchovy sauce ( not necessary/ on your preference)

5. Done! After all of this process, you'll get this warm seaweed soup!

It must be savory and deep with the harmony of seaweed, beef, and abalone.

And you'll love it :)

Why don't you celebrate your coming birthday in Korean style with Miyeok Guk (미역국) ?

I hope you enjoyed this posting today!

Thank you.
